Description
In 1858. Bishop Thomas Atkinson establish St. Paul’s, where black and white members worship together. The church was renovated by black craftsmen, and the music was offered by a black choir.
After the Civil War the church was reopened as St. Paul’s Colored Mission. Eventually, the black members of St. Paul’s build and establish St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, having outgrown St. Paul’s, while white members re-organize the parish.
Ellen Weig has worked on ministries for reconciliation and re-establishing the black history of St. Paul's.
