Description
An account of the resource
By Debra M. Brewin-Wilson, 2017. "An adult education program invited participants to reflect on their own spiritual gifts and response to the Baptismal Covenant in light of material presented about four Celtic saints: Saints Brendan, Brigid, Columba, and Patrick. The material presented included stories, songs, and visual art about each saint. Using open-ended questionnaires, small-group discussion, journaling, and semi-structured interviews, participants were able to express that they had engaged more deeply with the Baptismal Covenant as a result of the program; the majority also identified ways they intended to more faithfully live out their baptismal identities in the future." -- (Abstract)

Church in the Forefront:Addressing Violence Against Women in the Anglican Diocese of Bondo, Kenya.
Description
An account of the resource
Gender-based violence is recognized as a pressing social issue because of its psychological and physical consequences to the victimized.1 This study will elaborate on how the presence of gender-based violence causes a ripple effect in the lives of the victimized, and also the dependents of these victimized women. Women who are susceptible to violence undertake the significant role of caring for the whole family which is a basic unit of the community. There should be cohesion within the social fabric of the community on issues of addressing violence against women. There should be systemic changes in unjust social structures in the community that perpetuates gender- based violence. The norms, ethics, the values, the morals and the culture of the society are constructed in such a way that they enhance exploitation of women which practically are the basis upon which societal practices are derived. The social institutions have been structured in such a way that they subordinate women. For instance, according to cultural practice, women’s roles are enshrined within the sphere of domestic chores. They are rarely involved in economic activities that can empower them to meet their basic needs. This makes their situation susceptible to gender-based violence. Likewise, women’s capacity becomes limited in their endeavor to implement their own fundamental rights. This results in women’s minimal ability to participate in institutional and public leadership.

Intentional Mentorship Lesson Plan for Training Lay and Clergy Leaders : a tool for Children's Ministry in the Diocese of Bondo, Kenya
Description
An account of the resource
Bondo Diocese is one of the Anglican dioceses that has made history in the life of the Anglican Province of Kenya through its progressive support of the quest for the ministry of women’s liberation. This diocese was the first to ordain and consecrate a female priest and a woman as a bishop in the entire Anglican Church in East Africa which includes countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi. Just as Bondo led the way with its support of women’s ministry, the diocese seeks to lead with its ministry for children. Bondo is a diocese with an established commitment to children’s ministry, but it can be stronger.

Let’s Talk About Money : How Breaking Money Silence In The American Church Unlocks Greater Christian Financial Generosity
Description
An account of the resource
By Ateek, Sari Naim (2020) -- The aim of this project thesis is to advance the research in the field of Christian charitable giving to the church in America. Prior studies in the field identify that American Christians have the capacity to give more, but choose to spend the majority of their discretionary income on consumer goods. Virtually absent from the research, however, are measured interventions that address this reality. This project thesis makes a connection between the cultural aversion to discussing money (money taboo) and the continuation of the consumer mindset. To that end, the thesis asks, does the simple act of examining one’s own relationship to money, spending, and generosity, in conversation with others in church, lead to greater intentionality with, and capacity for, charitable giving? The purpose is to provide research based evidence for the theological and practical importance of discussing money in church. Using a Christian Formation approach in which eighteen individuals come together to engage in honest money conversations, this thesis uncovers a positive causal relationship between discussing money in the context of a faith community, and increased financial generosity to the church. The project also shows that discussing money in this way lessens the perceived distance between money and spirituality, decreases personal financial stress, and leads to greater awareness with money and spending. The significance of this study is that it informs our theological and sociological understanding of the importance of human connection to the development of greater financial maturity and generosity.

Companion on the Journey: Peer Influence on Spiritual Development in College Residential Communities
Description
An account of the resource
The purpose of this thesis project is to examine a new opportunity for students to explore spiritual development beyond programs offered through the office of university ministry. Central to this project is the idea of how peers influence spiritual development in residence hall environments. This project was selected because of documented declines in spiritual practices (i.e., attending church services, active prayer life, volunteering) by current college students, and relevant research that indicates colleges have significantly shifted their focus to ensure students gain employable skills – this at the unintentional expense of addressing inner-life development. Specifically, at Gonzaga University, two contradictory trends were observed when analyzing campus surveys and data collected during the admission process – there is a clear desire expressed by students to grow in the area of spirituality but a significant drop in religious activities over their four years of being students.
Based upon this information, a joint project between the university ministry,
housing and residence life, and the office of student wellbeing was proposed. The central element of this project was the development of a resident minister (RM) position who would live in community with first- and second-year students. This thesis project describes the process of developing this position and the impacts of peer residential ministers in the communities where they lived. The placement of spiritual peer mentors in residence is unique and significantly different from traditional resident assistants (RAs).
Additionally, the residence hall setting provided an environment for daily interaction and engagement as opposed to singular programming models.
This project was evaluated through ethnographic observational data, regularly scheduled debrief and support meetings with the RMs, and a corresponding pre-test and post-test given to the residents in these communities. The length of this project and evaluation was conducted over an entire academic year. Two communities were selected for residential ministers and one control community was used to compare impact. Communities with resident ministers had approximately 24 students in their immediate charge. RMs also worked with the staff of resident directors and resident assistants to provide programming and support for the entire building. The control community included approximately 36 students. A select sample of this community was included in pre-test and post-test surveying.
Pre-tests were administered in the three communities (resident minister-A,
resident minister-B, and the control community-C) during the first 14 days of the Fall semester (2015). The test consisted of 30 questions to establish a baseline from which to judge any eventual relative change in six pre-determined criteria focused on spiritual and inner life development. These six areas were: (1) decision-making - parental/peer influence, (2) values clarification, (3) behaviors of spirituality, (4) sense of meaning and
purpose, (5) connection to community, and (6) awareness of personal change.
Before the final exams in the spring semester (2016), an identical 30-question post-test was administered to provide data to assess the influence of the residential ministers. In addition to the original questions in the pre-test, 10 questions were added to the post-test to allow respondents to provide feedback on their year and on the RM if respondents were members of community A or B.

Falling in love with God : praying scripture with imagination
Description
An account of the resource
By Blake, Sandra Caswell, 2019. "The view from the chancel of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church/Denver on Sunday reveals 70 - 90 year old gray heads vastly outnumbering the young. It is cause for the concern among Episcopal churches and other Christian denominations that white Christians in the United States are statistically in decline. Folks who declare no religious affiliation at all are growing in number. Social Scientists call this phenomenon lagging generational replacement, changing racial demographics and cultural movement embracing diversity in America (diversity viewed by some as antithetical to Christianity). The Pew Research Center in 2014 reported five million fewer mainline Protestant adults than in 2007. And young adults (millennials raised in mainline traditions) are particularly unlikely to stay with mainline churches.2 Episcopalians in the United States appear to be a remnant people in a post-Christian age. In light of those inarguable trends, it was interesting that two young adults (in their late 20s and early 30s) that don’t usually attend adult education programs at St. Luke’s, were the first to volunteer for Falling in love with God, praying scripture with imagination, the subject of the Advent Retreat proposed to St. Luke’s as this dissertation project. Volunteer narratives from the study indicated serious desire to go deeper in the faith, in spite of the frenzied life-styles of many volunteers.<br /><br />After nineteen years of doing ministry in Colorado, (17 years in jails and prisons concurrently with 13 years in parish ministry), I wondered about the potential for deeper intimacy with the divine in both venues that tended to be generous in head-based religious programming and sparse in programming leading to depth in spirituality. I wondered if the future thriving of the Episcopal Church and other mainline denominations might be contingent upon deeper inner experiences of God by parishioners. It seemed that the process of praying scripture with imagination in conversation with the risen Christ as practiced in the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (19th Annotation Retreats) at Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Colorado might be an “intervention” in this study to encourage a deeper relationship with God. Fifteen parishioners at St. Luke’s were willing to test Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises as a path to greater intimacy with the divine during an Advent Retreat in 2017. </p><p>Methodology for the act of ministry in this thesis project is hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative inquiry.
<p>This methodology is narrative driven, focusing on lived experiences of parishioners during the Advent Retreat. The project was deepening relationship with God engaging the process of Spiritual Exercises praying scripture with imagination, journaling dialogue with the risen Christ, sharing experiences born out of that spiritual practice, and giving feedback in written and spoken form. Volunteers came out of curiosity, out of friendship with the researcher/priest, and with desire to take their spirituality to a deeper level. In the end there was expressed hope that there be more experiential heart centered spirituality in faith formation programs of St. Luke’s.</p>
<p>A bracketed presupposition of this dissertation project is Karl Rahner’s belief (shared by the researcher/priest) that Christians in the future will be mystics in love with God or they will not exist at all. A practical presupposition is that research by this researcher/priest as a project leader from St. Luke’s might reflect limited, even skewed, critical response from volunteers for the project."</p>

Power and Piety: <em>discretio spirituum</em> in the paratexts of early modern English women translators
Description
An account of the resource
By Amanda Bourne, 2020 -- The use of modesty topoi by early modern women writers has frequently been studied, but very rarely have these literary devices been explicated in light of the theological traditions which dictated their use. This study argues that the ways of addressing and appealing to religiopolitical authorities in the English Reformation remained largely continuous with the preReformation tradition of discretio spirituum as a source of spiritual and literary authorization, even as evangelicalism and humanism differentiated the theologies and educations of these women from their visionary predecessors. By looking at the paratexts of Anne Cooke Bacon, Elizabeth I, Anne Locke, and Mary Sidney Herbert, this study examines the continuities of discretio spirituum in the work of evangelical translators during the Tudor Reformations. Recognizing discretio spirituum as an ongoing source of religious and political legitimation in early modern England complicates the study of female discourse, and allows for a more complete picture of the self-fashioning of women writers across the Reformation

Servant Leaders Seeking Justice : An Ethnographic Sketch of Trinity United Methodist Church (1774-2023)
Description
An account of the resource
On November 20, 1774, a young, itinerant Methodist minister, William Duke, rode into Alexandria, Virginia, and preached to a small group of local people. He recorded in his diary that he had “formed them into a new society.” No pomp and circumstance, no grand gestures or even a modest celebration ushered in this new Methodist society.2 Church archives yield sparse documentation of its organization. Few names are associated with those early days when the Methodist movement was planted in Alexandria, Virginia. Yet, if it is evidence one seeks, look no further than 2911 Cameron Mills Road, home of the third “meeting house” of that society, Trinity United Methodist Church, which later became a congregation in an emerging Protestant denomination.

Description
An account of the resource
By Leonard Cambra, 2016. "There is an economic divide between educators and students. It is reflective of deeply rooted ideological principles that perpetuate educational inequities. Culture is rooted in socio-economic class. Schools mirror the societies that have created them. The culture of testing directly relates to these ideological principles and injustices. Only a process of co-subjecctivity rooted in a shared human, historic experience could provide a proper fulcrum for conscientization to occur. The poverty simulation was selected to provide faculty this window into a shared experience with the urban poor. Its purpose, to begin a process of 'conscientization' in order to begin a process of structural reform which will improve teaching and learning at the school and raise the percent of students who graduate. Without further professional development and in tandem with other attempted reforms tied to the dominant culture, the immediate results were encouraging, subsequent ones were not. These latter results highlight the need for ongoing professional development to provide a different language expressive of a different reality. To be human is to be relational and exist within a spontaneous dynamic of love fostered in deep respect and understanding but also rooted in challenge and promise. To the fostering of these ends the Poverty Simulation was undertaken as a necessary preamble to comprehensive reforms and adjustments in what we do as urban educators." -- (Abstract)

The Episcopal Church in Native American Boarding Schools (1862-1905): Varieties of Assimilation through Transfer Narratives
Description
An account of the resource
By Jean Cotting (2020) -- "Within the context of Native American boarding schools, the main objective of the founding Christian churches and later the government was assimilation of students. That is to say, unlike the conventional definition of assimilation which involves recent arrivals adopting the cultural norms of a new homeland, the assimilative process of education in the boarding schools was designed so that children, already situated in their own homeland, gave up their distinctive culture and adopted the cultural norms of white settler society. Within boarding schools such assimilation consisted of eliminating the language, dress, cultural practices, and a unifying ethos of nationhood for Native American children,. In this thesis I will identify these assimilative practices and streams of thought in the Episcopal Church from the mid nineteenth century through the early years of the twentieth century."

Description
An account of the resource
By Robin Elaine Denney, 2017. -- This thesis moves toward a constructive theology of mission amidst the core problems associated with short-term mission: paternalism, dependency and disempowerment, and lack of critical reflection. Voices in World Christian are prioritized by engaging these problems in conversation with world theology, the contextualization of scripture, and critical reflection on mission practice. From this conversation, nine principles are identified to shape constructive practice : encounter, incarnation, worship, empowerment, narrative, proclamation, repentance, reconciliation, and discernment. These principles are applied to case studies of innovative short-term mission and cross-cultural relationships.

Vestry Members as Trustees of the Soul of the Parish
Description
An account of the resource
by Divis, Mary Lou Hoover (2020) -- Vestry members need to understand their leadership role in the parish by attending worship and meetings, engaging in the life of the parish, establishing prayer and Bible reading habits. In a specific workshop, Vestry members will learn that their role and vision are needed by attendance at worship and meetings and engaged in the life of the parish. The project is a five (5) hour retreat based on the calling to leadership of Moses (Exod. 3:1-6) and Paul (Acts 9:1-6). This retreat also offers Kathryn Tyler Scott’s work on Trusteeship to encourage Vestry members at both parishes to realize that they need to be dedicated to growth, change, learning, and prayer support as a team in order to move into the future. Each vestry retreat will culminate with a written Covenant Agreement describing how Vestry members are called to lead by attending worship, being prepared to attend meetings, promising to pray and read the Bible. The future is in their hands to encourage growth in their relationship with God and Scripture, to attend worship and meetings with intentionality, to engage with the parish community and those not yet in the parish.

Description
An account of the resource
By Robert J.F. Elsner, 2016. "The overall purpose of the project was to develop leadership that could change the campus culture to be truer to the Christian mission of a small, rural, distressed Christian college. A total of 157 students participated in the progressive components of this study, including associate researchers (8), Focus group participants (38), Semi-structured interviewees (28), one-on-one (clinical) interviewees (25), role-play training and survey of campus leaders (34). A series of vignettes allowed for role-playing investigations of themes of evangelism. Participants completed a pre-program assessment, participated in the two weeks of training, and another two weeks later completed a post-training assessment that included views on the training itself. Members of student organizations (n=34) were then assessed changes in leadership two weeks after the final leader assessment. Results indicate that the program was effective in changing leaders' views of faith and fear, and was perceived as being efficacious by both leaders and organizational members. Similar evangelical leadership programs could be developed in other collegiate and youth environments to serve the Church and reverse the current trends of youth leaving the church."

Description
An account of the resource
By Evancho, Nicholas, 2018 -- "Because the foundation of medieval philosophical and conceptual thought was the context of Christian doctrine and practice, when inquiry began into the workings of the natural world it was done from the same theological origin. God was seen as the origin of all things and the supreme governor of the world and so it was firmly believed that anything which was true of God would be true of the world at least in a limited sense. Within the medieval consciousness, there was an assumed link between the study of the Creator and the study of the creation and each was able to inform the study of the other.
In today’s world, the idea that scientific inquiry should begin within the framework of Christian theology seems misguided and antiquated. However, in the Middle Ages there was not yet an intellectual distinction between the veracity of theology and that of physical science. This allowed for a sort of spiritual science which conceived of a divinely infused world in which all perceived truths were intimately related and knowledge of the Creator dictated the understanding of the creation. It is difficult for the modern mind to blend the beliefs of faith with the distinctions and formulas of science but for the medieval theologians and esotericists it was impossible to separate the two without somehow admitting that one was not fully true. Through the recovery of the spirit of these esoteric doctrines, the modern Christian can regain an openness to a universe of divine immanence and action during a time where the natural world is understood solely through a mechanical lens."

Sin and Salvation : An Inter-Cultural Re-Reading
Description
An account of the resource
Is it possible to have only one conception of sin? Of salvation? Derek Nelson in Sin: A Guide for the Perplexed observes that with a variety of approaches, we are able to “see, in relief and detail, features of sin that might be otherwise obscured.” One might say the same of salvation. We can thus gain a richer view of sin and salvation when we put old and new,
traditional and post-colonial theologians in conversation. Looking through the lenses of an early church father, St. Augustine, born and bred in Northern Africa, but a citizen of the Roman Empire, Wonhee Anne Joh, a feminist theologian born in Korea but largely raised in the United States, and Randy Woodley, a Native American theologian also born and raised in the United States but with deep Cherokee roots, we see commonalities and differences. A common sense of something inherent about being human that often leads us to hurt ourselves, others, and creation. The salvation of Christ’s life, death and resurrection is the window into God’s love that desired to heal us so much that God joined humanity in the world and ultimately suffered for us. Yet it also shows us the power of the life lived in love (Augustine)/jeong (Joh) /shalom (Woodley) that God calls us to which is able to heal that buried wound. Through this window, Christ’s life, death and resurrection, then, provides us with the power, grace and freedom to also pursue that life. There are differences in the theologies of these three, of course, coming from different contexts. When we open our ears to the Spirit, however, and the possibilities that cultures beyond our own have something to teach us, we may actually be reminded of what we already knew. Even as we gain greater understanding.

Baptism to confirmation in the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia: Strategies for faith formation in children (ages 7-12).
Description
An account of the resource
This capstone focuses on the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia. The faith formation of children has not been a priority in many churches within the diocese of over 30 years. Inadequate attention has been paid to the resources used or the modes of training teachers. Too many children and youth gravitate to other denominations because they do not experience meaningful and relevant teachings to their faith development in the Episcopal Church. Without updated strategies for renewed ministry to children, their faith foundation will be diminished, and the church's growth will continue to be hampered. The growing needs for adequate children's faith formation is crucial for the growth of the church. Identifying specific programs that cater to children's learning and development goals in the church requires planning, training, and implementation. This project seeks to further discuss the historical context of the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia in chapter one. In chapter two, the author will explore the biblical and theological foundation for faith formation, followed by proposing a contextually appropriate curriculum for children in the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia in chapter three.

Description
An account of the resource
By Alexander C. Graham IV, 2020 -- "Go up to a group of clergy and say, “let’s talk about Church musicians…” and the eyerolls will be ubiquitous and revelatory. Go up to a group of Church musicians and do the reverse, and expect to encounter the same dramatic response. As a priest who was first a musician, I understood both worldviews personally, but needed to explore them on a larger scale.
Through individual interviews, I sought to explore the nature of the unique and unusual relationship between musicians and clerics. What made it work? Where were there problems? How does one group tend to view the other? I then brought the participants together for a plenary session to test what I thought I learned and to discern together in a group what makes for a good relationship, and where the tensions might lie.
One of the significant learnings (for both myself and for those musicians and clerics participating) during this project was that the stories of epically tragic cleric-musician relationships, while perhaps entertaining, are far more widespread than encountered in real life, and do not match the overall experience of the participants or their colleagues. Problems – even daunting ones – do arise, and can be addressed, but they do not escalate to the level of popular expectation."

‘Evangelistening’ – Listening as Evangelism in Caring Concern for Community
Description
An account of the resource
By Nyasha Gumbeze, 2020 -- "Anglican congregations throughout Western countries are struggling with the decline of membership numbers as the societal context becomes more secular. Members at Henderson Anglican Church in Auckland, New Zealand, are faithfully seeking their spiritual growth as they experience God in a Christian context. The members are evangelical in that they are welcoming to the community and hoping for new members that they might experience the blessings of the Christian life. Listening is an evangelism tool that works well in a secular and increasingly multi-cultural society like New Zealand. Church members can share the Christian experience without needing to assert Christianity's preeminence, and it has the added benefit of encouraging the Christian community and personal growth.
My thesis does not intend to redefine evangelism or the call of the church anew; instead, it provides some practical guidelines to help the church fulfill its vocation. My parish benefitted from learning to listen with one another. My goal for this thesis project is to offer a method through which churches might approach evangelism for ministry and mission to their members as well as connecting them to the broader community. The title itself “Evangelistening” is a direct reference to a book by Tim Sumpter Evangelistening: Recovering the Art of Listening in Evangelism."
