Designs of the Deep: The Creator God's Binding of Wind, Water, and Darkness in Genesis 1, Psalm 104, and Job 38

Title

Designs of the Deep: The Creator God's Binding of Wind, Water, and Darkness in Genesis 1, Psalm 104, and Job 38

Description

Genesis 1, Psalm 104, and Job 38 engage the story of the earth’s creation in dramatic detail. The
three cosmic creation forces of wind, water, and darkness can be identified as common themes
among the three passages. The thesis and accompanying immersive art installation explore the
relation of these forces to the Creator and Sustainer God's binding act at the beginning of time.
Through Hebrew word study of nine key terms and an exegetical dialogue of the three texts on
the relations between God and the three forces, the thesis seeks to understand the binding relation
of God with wind, water, and darkness, generating comprehensive implications of God’s actions
as Creator. Through use of light, darkness, shape, and composite materials, the immersive art
installation, which was constructed at Virginia Theological Seminary in the Spring of 2024,
invites the viewer into a prayerful reflection on their own relationship with the Creator God.
