Michael K. Powell is the President and CEO of NCTA - The Internet & Television Association, one of Washington, DC’s largest trade associations. Powell is a former Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), having been appointed an FCC Commissioner in 1997 by President Clinton, and appointed Chair by President George W. Bush in 2001, serving until 2005. Prior public service includes: Chief of Staff of the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice; Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Defense; and military service as an armored calvary officer in the US Army. He also clerked on the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. In the private sector, Powell practiced law and was a senior advisor in a private equity firm. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of William & Mary and served as its Board Chair. He holds his JD degree from Georgetown University. He currently Chairs the Board of Trustees of the Mayo Clinic. Powell is married to the former Jane Knott, and they have two sons. He is the son of the late former US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Ms. Alma Johnson Powell. He is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in McLean, VA.
