Description
An account of the resource
By Tracy Wenger Sadd. -- "The purpose of this study was to test whether or not using inquiry-based pedagogies, specifically big questions inquiry and appreciative inquiry, to teach Christian theology and religion in an undergraduate first-year seminar course would result in experimental group students reporting increased development of their inner lives and also greater advancements in interfaith understanding and bridge-building behaviors, regardless of the students’ religious or non-religious affiliations, as opposed to comparison group students. This research was conducted over a two-year period, from the students’ entry into college until the end of the students’ sophomore year.
The quantitative results suggest that an inquiry-based pedagogy applied to the teaching of theology and religion can advance students’ spiritual development or enhance their “inner lives” if spiritual development and inner lives are defined in the following ways: Being more aware of who I am, being able to clearly articulate my beliefs, increased curiosity, increased spiritual quest, increased happiness, increased satisfaction with self, finding a sense of what makes life meaningful, and finding a sense of purpose in life. The quantitative results also suggest that an inquiry-based pedagogy applied to the teaching of theology and religion can increase students’ dispositions and behaviors related to what Alexander Astin, Helen Astin, and Jennifer Lindholm call “ecumenical worldview,” and what Eboo Patel calls pluralistic bridge-building behaviors.
...
As a result of this research, the national chaplains networks should consider possible student learning outcomes for student spiritual development, as well as standardizing some best practices for inviting students not only to learn facts about the religions of the world, but also for inviting students to reflect to on their own religious beliefs or non-religious philosophies, not just as systems or institutions of thought and practices, but also as personal theologies or philosophies of life." -- (Abstract)

Description
An account of the resource
By Harrison M. McLeod -- "The purpose of this thesis is to establish a set of “Guiding Principles” for the design and implementation of effective parochial mission work that is faithful to Jesus’ command in Matthew 25 and genuinely respects and values those serving and those being served.
As commanded by Jesus in Matthew 25, incumbent in our faith as Christians is the call to serve the needs of the poor and the oppressed. This service is manifest in specific works of compassion and aid to those in need. In response to Jesus’ call, parishes allocate resources of time, talent and treasure to relieve the needs of the poor. Unfortunately, these well meaning efforts can create dependency on the part of the recipient and foster “burnout” on the part of the parishioners. In order to develop a set of “Guiding Principles” for effective mission work an examination of the biblical and sacramental foundations of mission work was undertaken. Building on the biblical and sacramental insights, several parishes were selected as case studies and invited to participate in a survey and extended nterviews followed by a group forum to determine strengths and weaknesses related to mission work. Based on the qualitative data received, this project attempts to define a set of “Guiding Principles” by which parochial mission work can be pursued to the mutual benefit of those serving as well as those served. The insights gained from this project have altered the manner in which mission work is undertaken and offered at Christ Church, Greenville, SC and may impact the future mission offerings of other parishes." -- (Abstract)

Description
An account of the resource
By Debra M. Brewin-Wilson, 2017. "An adult education program invited participants to reflect on their own spiritual gifts and response to the Baptismal Covenant in light of material presented about four Celtic saints: Saints Brendan, Brigid, Columba, and Patrick. The material presented included stories, songs, and visual art about each saint. Using open-ended questionnaires, small-group discussion, journaling, and semi-structured interviews, participants were able to express that they had engaged more deeply with the Baptismal Covenant as a result of the program; the majority also identified ways they intended to more faithfully live out their baptismal identities in the future." -- (Abstract)

"Through my thesis research and project, I studied clerical bivocationalism and itinerant ministry in EDOW [the Episcopal Diocese of Washington] from practical, spiritual, and theological angles. In these pages, I will analyze my work and propose concrete ways in which the Diocese as a large institution with six geographic regions, from Washington, D.C. to St. Mary’s County in Southern Maryland -- as well as EDOW’s individual members -- can move into a new paradigm and better understanding of the unique gifts of itinerant ministry." -- (p. 2)

Description
An account of the resource
By Kenneth Roger Willy, 2016 -- Every Episcopal school is different, and each school’s understanding of what makes it Episcopal and how that identity is translated into action, is specific to its own context. Claiming Episcopal School Identity: Principles, Understanding, and Practices is based on my work as the newly appointed Headmaster of the Oak Hall Episcopal School (OHES). In this role I led the School community (Board, Faculty & Staff, Parents, and Students) to a deeper understanding of what it meant for them to be an Episcopal school, and the practices they should embrace to better live into that identity. To guide this process, I developed three Principles of Episcopal School Identity (ESI) from the synthesis of material and resources made available from associations, dioceses, schools and individuals. For further clarification, I differentiated between the Principles and the Practices that demonstrate these Principles. The results of an audit of the current practices at OHES gave the basis for a three-phased approach to developing clearer understandings of ESI. On three occasions over a 22-month period the subject group, comprised of faculty & staff, was asked, “What is most distinctive, enduring, and central to an Episcopal school?” Their responses were used to measure the development in their understanding of Episcopal school identity. The results showed that the subjects began with a much stronger understanding of ESI than they had been credited with prior to the start of the Project, and that through the use of a variety of strategies, the understanding of some subjects was increased or deepened. However, the development of, and education about, ESI will remain an ongoing project as there are always new Faculty & Staff, new Trustees, new Parents, and new Students joining the Oak Hall Episcopal School community.

Description
An account of the resource
By Leonard Cambra, 2016. "There is an economic divide between educators and students. It is reflective of deeply rooted ideological principles that perpetuate educational inequities. Culture is rooted in socio-economic class. Schools mirror the societies that have created them. The culture of testing directly relates to these ideological principles and injustices. Only a process of co-subjecctivity rooted in a shared human, historic experience could provide a proper fulcrum for conscientization to occur. The poverty simulation was selected to provide faculty this window into a shared experience with the urban poor. Its purpose, to begin a process of 'conscientization' in order to begin a process of structural reform which will improve teaching and learning at the school and raise the percent of students who graduate. Without further professional development and in tandem with other attempted reforms tied to the dominant culture, the immediate results were encouraging, subsequent ones were not. These latter results highlight the need for ongoing professional development to provide a different language expressive of a different reality. To be human is to be relational and exist within a spontaneous dynamic of love fostered in deep respect and understanding but also rooted in challenge and promise. To the fostering of these ends the Poverty Simulation was undertaken as a necessary preamble to comprehensive reforms and adjustments in what we do as urban educators." -- (Abstract)

Description
An account of the resource
By Rachel Nyback, 2015. "Newly ordained priests are not given consistent support upon entering the ministry. As the practical, dynamic theology of the priesthood becomes more prevalent in western culture, newly ordained priests need help navigating their role and function post-ordination. Mentors have been shown to be an effective source of support for newly ordained priests. Training and continued support of the mentors is crucial in setting expectations for reflective practice and for attaining best practices in the mentor relationship. This thesis explores the training of mentors over a nine-month period and the benefits of reflective relationships with their assigned mentees. " -- Abstract

Description
An account of the resource
By Richard Tsang, 2016. "This paper pinpoints the social situation of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Holy Spirit Church Ping Pong Ministry (HKSKH HSC PPM), the theological concept and scheme, in terms of shepherding, and will examine and reflect on its goals and effectiveness of research papers. Its methodology will cover the theory of the Bible and theology, and according to the many years of practical experience as a vicar (evangelical work, building relationships, the link between the church and society) and the evaluation of sociology (leadership, relationship between coach and trainees, life education, etc.). In this study, the final hope is that continued progress on this important ministry can be helpful, and can produce some inspired actions in similar sports ministry."

Description
An account of the resource
By Robert J.F. Elsner, 2016. "The overall purpose of the project was to develop leadership that could change the campus culture to be truer to the Christian mission of a small, rural, distressed Christian college. A total of 157 students participated in the progressive components of this study, including associate researchers (8), Focus group participants (38), Semi-structured interviewees (28), one-on-one (clinical) interviewees (25), role-play training and survey of campus leaders (34). A series of vignettes allowed for role-playing investigations of themes of evangelism. Participants completed a pre-program assessment, participated in the two weeks of training, and another two weeks later completed a post-training assessment that included views on the training itself. Members of student organizations (n=34) were then assessed changes in leadership two weeks after the final leader assessment. Results indicate that the program was effective in changing leaders' views of faith and fear, and was perceived as being efficacious by both leaders and organizational members. Similar evangelical leadership programs could be developed in other collegiate and youth environments to serve the Church and reverse the current trends of youth leaving the church."

Description
An account of the resource
By Ketlen Adrien Solak, 2016. "This thesis comprises five chapters. In this first chapter I describe the difficulty that a number of teenagers and their parents, who worship at St. Luke's, experience when they are invited to articulate their personal journeys of faith. I also draw attention to the potential benefits that may result if the church finds ways to assist teenagers and their parents in learning how to better grasp and express their stories of faith. In the second chapter, I write about the design of the thesis project as well as about how and why I chose to develop this particular project. In the third chapter, I describe the methodology used to design and administer the surveys used during the project and highlight the themes and learnings that emerged from them. In the fourth chapter, I discuss more deeply the various themes and learnings that have surfaced by analyzing them through a number of sources in practical theology and human and faith development. In the fifth and last chapter, I summarize the main points of the thesis, propose a few recommendations, and offer personal reflections about my engagement with the project."

Description
An account of the resource
By Peter John Hobbs, 2013. -- For many years, the parish of Christ Church Bells Corners in Ottawa, Ontario has made the faith formation of children and youth a high priority. As the Rector, I began to the suspect the results of this ministry were fragile. Social science has demonstrated that Canadian mainline churches have experienced a demographic decline and face an uncertain future. The Anglican Church of Canada, for example, exists now as a de-facto disestablished, remnant Christian entity in the early years of a post-Christendom epoch. Within this context congregations must partner with parents and households in the faith formation of young people. The act of ministry at the heart of this thesis project is a hermeneutic phenomenological, qualitative inquiry of the essence of the lived experience of teenagers doing Lectio Divina with their parents at home during Lent 2012. While the hermeneutic phenomenological method calls for a bracketing of prior knowledge and presuppositions, at the outset of the project I anticipated that participating teenagers would demonstrate a willingness to discuss matters of faith, engage in theological reflection, find comfort and enjoyment in doing Lectio Divina with their parents, and show interest in continued spiritual practices at home. The methodology culminates in an exhaustive description of the experience. In the concluding chapter I offer reflections, learnings, and recommendations pertaining specifically to an ongoing partnership between parent, pastor and congregation as well as the usefulness of hermeneutic phenomenology within the frames of pastoral and practical theology.

An account of the resource
By Amy Doyle Welin, 2018. -- "In a large, stable, suburban parish, Sunday formation programming was declining rapidly. Parents expressed concern that their children could not participate in Sunday School classes due to other family commitments. As a missional experiment during a transitional period, the interim rector introduced Hungry Soul, an innovative eucharistic service designed to provide spiritual formation for young families. Using a contemporary format of lectio divina, the group explored the
Gospel and shared communion, which was followed by a potluck supper."

Falling in love with God : praying scripture with imagination
Description
An account of the resource
By Blake, Sandra Caswell, 2019. "The view from the chancel of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church/Denver on Sunday reveals 70 - 90 year old gray heads vastly outnumbering the young. It is cause for the concern among Episcopal churches and other Christian denominations that white Christians in the United States are statistically in decline. Folks who declare no religious affiliation at all are growing in number. Social Scientists call this phenomenon lagging generational replacement, changing racial demographics and cultural movement embracing diversity in America (diversity viewed by some as antithetical to Christianity). The Pew Research Center in 2014 reported five million fewer mainline Protestant adults than in 2007. And young adults (millennials raised in mainline traditions) are particularly unlikely to stay with mainline churches.2 Episcopalians in the United States appear to be a remnant people in a post-Christian age. In light of those inarguable trends, it was interesting that two young adults (in their late 20s and early 30s) that don’t usually attend adult education programs at St. Luke’s, were the first to volunteer for Falling in love with God, praying scripture with imagination, the subject of the Advent Retreat proposed to St. Luke’s as this dissertation project. Volunteer narratives from the study indicated serious desire to go deeper in the faith, in spite of the frenzied life-styles of many volunteers.<br /><br />After nineteen years of doing ministry in Colorado, (17 years in jails and prisons concurrently with 13 years in parish ministry), I wondered about the potential for deeper intimacy with the divine in both venues that tended to be generous in head-based religious programming and sparse in programming leading to depth in spirituality. I wondered if the future thriving of the Episcopal Church and other mainline denominations might be contingent upon deeper inner experiences of God by parishioners. It seemed that the process of praying scripture with imagination in conversation with the risen Christ as practiced in the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (19th Annotation Retreats) at Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Colorado might be an “intervention” in this study to encourage a deeper relationship with God. Fifteen parishioners at St. Luke’s were willing to test Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises as a path to greater intimacy with the divine during an Advent Retreat in 2017. </p><p>Methodology for the act of ministry in this thesis project is hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative inquiry.
<p>This methodology is narrative driven, focusing on lived experiences of parishioners during the Advent Retreat. The project was deepening relationship with God engaging the process of Spiritual Exercises praying scripture with imagination, journaling dialogue with the risen Christ, sharing experiences born out of that spiritual practice, and giving feedback in written and spoken form. Volunteers came out of curiosity, out of friendship with the researcher/priest, and with desire to take their spirituality to a deeper level. In the end there was expressed hope that there be more experiential heart centered spirituality in faith formation programs of St. Luke’s.</p>
<p>A bracketed presupposition of this dissertation project is Karl Rahner’s belief (shared by the researcher/priest) that Christians in the future will be mystics in love with God or they will not exist at all. A practical presupposition is that research by this researcher/priest as a project leader from St. Luke’s might reflect limited, even skewed, critical response from volunteers for the project."</p>

Vestry Members as Trustees of the Soul of the Parish
Description
An account of the resource
by Divis, Mary Lou Hoover (2020) -- Vestry members need to understand their leadership role in the parish by attending worship and meetings, engaging in the life of the parish, establishing prayer and Bible reading habits. In a specific workshop, Vestry members will learn that their role and vision are needed by attendance at worship and meetings and engaged in the life of the parish. The project is a five (5) hour retreat based on the calling to leadership of Moses (Exod. 3:1-6) and Paul (Acts 9:1-6). This retreat also offers Kathryn Tyler Scott’s work on Trusteeship to encourage Vestry members at both parishes to realize that they need to be dedicated to growth, change, learning, and prayer support as a team in order to move into the future. Each vestry retreat will culminate with a written Covenant Agreement describing how Vestry members are called to lead by attending worship, being prepared to attend meetings, promising to pray and read the Bible. The future is in their hands to encourage growth in their relationship with God and Scripture, to attend worship and meetings with intentionality, to engage with the parish community and those not yet in the parish.

Description
An account of the resource
by Dawna D. Wall, 2013 - How do we as people of faith keep ourselves in tune with the rhythm and mystery of God while being inundated with increasing levels of information, noise, frantic motion, and jobs that are more connected to the flow of information than to the flow of body, mind, and spirit? How can communities of faith offer sanctuary to those yearning for it? Learning from monastic communities that help connect individual lives with the Divine by keeping the seven hours, and mingling work and prayer, this project explored the possibility that a modern, accessible retreat could help participants reconnect body, mind, and spirit. In a one-day retreat in an Anglican Cathedral setting, 42 participants, ranging in age from 7 to 86, loosely kept the seven hours and engaged in creative activities: self-directed art projects, needlework, labyrinth walking, illuminating letters, baking, gardening and making rosaries. Participants rated their levels of peacefulness upon arrival and departure, and explored the areas where they had experienced stress during the day, and what they felt led them to a deeper peace. Contained encounters with stress helped participants move to deeper levels of internal peacefulness, as did support and feedback provided through the structure and experience of the event. Seasonal one-day retreats which mingle prayer, creative activity and silence offered in the intrinsic beauty of our churches can help increase inner peace in ways that spill over into daily lives, and can strengthen the ministries of the churches themselves.
